Neuronal cell types
نویسنده
چکیده
Identifying the functionally distinct types of neuron is central to any bottom-up understanding of how the brain works. The different cell types are the brain’s elementary computational elements — the components from which the larger machine is made. We have known of some cell types for more than a century, but the coverage has been spotty and anecdotal. This is changing: it is now possible to assemble more or less complete inventories of cell types — the brain’s parts list, upon which all understandings of brain function depend. The recognition that neurons are distinct functional entities was the first great contribution of neurobiology’s founding father, Santiago Ramon y Cajal, who could make that leap because he had a method, the Golgi stain, which shows individual neurons in spectacular isolation from their neighbors. It was immediately apparent that neurons come in a florid variety of shapes and the identification of neuronal types, an industry that still flourishes, was set in motion. How are neuronal types distinguished and why do neurobiologists care so much about them?

Improving the neuronal differentiation efficiency of umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells cultivated under appropriate conditions
Objective(s): Umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UCB-MSCs) are ideally suited for use in various cell-based therapies. We investigated a novel induction protocol (NIP) to improve the neuronal differentiation of human UCB-MSCs under appropriate conditions. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was performed in Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO), Tehran, I...
متن کاملEffects of spironolactone and fludrocortisone on neuronal and glial toxicity induced by N-methyl-D-Aspartate and chloroquine in cell culture
Spironolactone has produced beneficial effects in animal models of neurodegenerative disorders. However, the underlying mechanisms of this agent on neurons and glia are mostly unknown. Therefore, we aimed to show the effects of spironolactone and fludrocortisone, a mineralocorticosteroid receptor agonist, on neuronal and glial toxicity induced by N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) activation and chlor...
متن کاملCulturing Adult Rat Hippocampal Neurons with Long-Interval Changing Media
Background: Primary cultures of embryonic neurons have been used to introduce a model of neurons in physiological and pathological conditions. However, age-related cellular events limit this method as an optimal model in adult neurodegenerative diseases studies. Besides, short-interval changing media in previous cultures decreases the effectiveness of this model. As an example of this matter, w...
متن کاملHigh neuronal/astroglial differentiation plasticity of adult rat hippocampal neural stem/progenitor cells in response to the effects of embryonic and adult cerebrospinal fluids
Hippocampal neural stem/progenitor cells (hipp-NS/PCs) of the adult mammalian brain are important sources of neuronal and gial cell production. In this study, the main goal is to investigate the plasticity of these cells in neuronal/astroglial differentiations. To this end, the differentiation of the hipp-NS/PCs isolated from 3-month-old Wistar rats was investigated in response to the embryonic...
متن کاملNeuroprotective Effect of Mitochondrial Katp Channel Opener Upon Neuronal Cortical Brain of Rat Population
Purpose: So far there is no effective drug therapy to prevent neuronal loss after brain stroke. In the present study we studied effects of The Mitochondrial K-ATP channel regulators on neuronal cell population and neurological function after ischemia reperfusion in the rat. Materials and Methods: Rats temporarily subjected to four vessels occlusion for 15 minutes followed by 24 hours reperfusi...
متن کاملALTERATIONS OF ADP-RIBOSYLATION AND DNA-BREAKS IN AGING BRAIN CELLS
Neuronal and astroglial cells were prepared from whole brain of three month and 30-month- old rats for study of alterations in the nuclear poly ADP-ribosylation and DNA breaks with age. The relative purity of the cell preparations was confirmed by the determination of the neurofilament (low molecular weight) and glutamine synthetase content of the cells using ELISA. An increase (75%) in th...
